Melissa officinalis (Lamiaceae) Lemon balm
Description
Melissa officinalis is a perennial herb growing to 0.7 m. It has a short root-stock, square and branching stem, with pairs of broadly ovate or heart-shaped, crenate, or toothed leaves, which emit a fragrant lemon odour when bruised. The flowers, white or yellowish, are in loose, small bunches from the axils of the leaves. The flowers are hermaphrodite and are pollinated by bees. M. officinalis is native to Europe, but now cultivated all over the world. It is grown herb gardens, to attract bees, or for medicine, cosmetics, and furniture polish manufacturing.
